A great leader is one who can inspire action, and foster a sense of loyalty and trust in others. Of course, many things have been said and written about what makes a compelling leader. However, the following six qualities of a leader have stood the test of time, and are evident in most successful people like Elon Musk, Warren Buffett, Theo Epstein, Melinda Gates, and Jeff Bezos, just to name a few.

Leadership can be defined differently by different people, but it’s generally the ability to steer others in the right direction. If we can borrow a leaf from John Maxwell definition, “a leader is [someone] who knows the way, goes the way, and show the way.” As such, leadership is a skill that allows one to not only understand the way but also goes the extra mile to show it and walk the talk.

No matter how you look at it, a leader is someone who makes the difference between failure and success. It’s a person who has a clear vision of the future and has what it takes to turn it into reality.

1) A Great Leader is Confident

A confident person holds his/her chin up, turns heads and commands respect. After all, if you’re uncertain about yourself, strengths, and decisions, who else will be willing to follow you? As a leader, you’ve to be exuding an air of confidence, assertiveness, and oomph to attain the respect of those under you.

2) Bold and Courageous

Courage is perhaps one of the most important qualities of a successful leader. Oftentimes that means having the ability and guts to take risks in order to achieve your goals. Most people fear to get outside their comfort zones, and it’s your responsibility to light the way for them.

3) A Great Leader Inspires Others

Ability to inspire others to do something or follow you is one of the most challenging tasks of a leader. That’s why great leaders lead by example and show positivity so that others can get inspired too.

4) Has a Passion and Commitment

Your subordinates are looking up to you. And, it’s the job of a leader to infuse more energy and pizzazz to the workplace. As a leader, you should be passionate and fully committed to what you do.

In politics, corporate, or business world myriads of decisions are made every day. That’s why a great leader is someone who makes wise and practical choices in a snappy. More importantly, the leader stands by those decisions.

6) Shows Honesty and Integrity

A great leader is truthful and accountable for what he or she does or says. Remember when you’re honest, you have nothing to hide or fear.

Most importantly, no one is born with good leadership qualities. Good leadership is developed throughout one's life, usually by challenging oneself and stepping outside of the comfort zone. It takes intention and practice, and the best thing, it is something that can be learned and practiced with the help of a leadership coach, (sometimes referred to as an executive coach, or a business coach).
