A Guide to Adult ADD / ADHD

Updated: Sep 27, 2019

There’s no question many Americans are aware of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder(ADHD or ADD). However, most people associate ADHD with children who are impulsive or hyperactive or have difficulty focusing at school. But, did you know adults can have attention- deficit hyperactivity disorder as well? Recent stats show that approximately 4-5 percent of Americans adults have ADD / ADHD. The trouble is that less than two-thirds of adult ADD / ADHD cases are diagnosed, and even more go untreated.

What’s Adult ADHD? You see, over 5% of US children are affected by ADHD, and nearly 60% of them carry the symptoms to their adulthood. That arises to what’s called adult ADHD. In principle, adult ADHD is a mental health condition that encompasses a combination of attention problems, including impulsive behavior, hyperactivity, and trouble focusing on work. As a consequence, an adult with ADHD often has unstable relationships, and exhibit wanting productivity, low self-esteem and poor work performance.

Who is affected by adult ADD / ADHD?

Again, ADD / ADHD in adults affects those who had the condition as kids. In fact, most adult ADD / ADHD cases are only discovered in adulthood. When it comes to gender, it turns out ADD / ADHD in adults affects both women and men equally.

What Are the Common Adult ADD / ADHD Symptoms? Most adults with ADHD show subtle symptoms which makes them struggle with the condition without knowing they have it.

Here are five potential signs that might depict that you’re experiencing adult ADD / ADHD:

#1. You have Marital or Relationship Problems While relationship problems shouldn’t be viewed as a red flag for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, most adults with ADD / ADHD tend to have marital issues and unstable relationships. That’s because most of them have severely poor listening skills and often fail (forget) to fulfill promises. As such, they seem like they don’t care about their partners.

#2. You have Poor Work Performance (Low Productivity) Most cases of ADD / ADHD in adults become apparent at work. That’s because ADD /ADHD adults aredisorganized, persistently fail to meet deadlines, and run to meetings late.

#3. You’re Disorganized Most adults with ADD / ADHD exhibit obvious lack of organizational skills. The situation is further worsened by adulthood responsibilities such as paying bills, staying on top of job requirements and taking care of children.

#4. You’re Prone to Traffic Accidents and Reckless Driving For persons with ADD / ADHD, driving can prove quite tricky because the condition makes it hard to focus on the task at hand. What’s more -- impulsive behavior associated with ADD / ADHD can make the person to speed or disregard traffic accidents.

#5. You Have Poor Listening Skills

Do you often find yourself zoning out during lengthy conversations or meeting? Does your spouse or partner complain that you’re not listening to them? Adult ADHD can make it hard to pay attention to what others are saying.

All these challenges can be resolved with ADD / ADD coaching! Medication is not the only way to deal with ADD. You can learn and master the skills that will in many ways transform your life.
